Hearing loss can’t always be prevented, but making healthy lifestyle choices might make a difference.
Here are a few ways you can make healthy choices now to help preserve your hearing for later:
Regularly consume Omega-3s, Potassium, Folate and Zinc
There are new studies that show conclusively that increased consumption of Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish and fish oil supplements have a direct effect on reducing hearing loss in an aging population.
Potassium plays an important role in the balancing of specific metabolic processes such as fluid levels and that makes it critical for good hearing, too.
Folate isn’t just for pregnant women! At least one study indicates that taking folate will reduce the risk of age-related hearing loss by as much as 35 percent.
Zinc is known to help fight infections and there is some research that shows that it actually makes a difference for those suffering with tinnitus.
Avoid excessive noise.
This is a no-brainer. Loud noises damage your hearing. If you are constantly exposed to loud noises, you will damage your hearing, and it cannot be repaired.
Protect your hearing whenever possible with over-the-ear muffs or custom molded ear plugs.
Exercise regularly.
Everyone knows that exercise has so many health benefits. But did you know it can help you keep your hearing too?
“Using mice, researchers demonstrated sedentary mice lost important auditory structures, namely hair cells and strial capillaries, in the cochlea.
Mice who exercised experienced a 5 percent hearing loss in their lifetime while sedentary mice suffered a 20 percent hearing loss on average. Researchers estimate that 70 percent of hearing loss in people over 70 is related to the loss of these structures.”
The bottom line is, healthy choices are going to make your life better – and if they can help you hear well into your golden years, even better.
