Study Shows How Hearing Aids Can Mitigate Cognitive Decline and Memory Loss

We’ve known for some time that untreated hearing loss can cause cognitive decline. Now, thanks to a new study, we see how hearing aids can mitigate cognitive decline and memory loss. Hearing is actually a function of the brain, which is where this connection comes in.

A few months ago, we told you about the connection between your brain and hearing and how untreated hearing loss can lead to cognitive decline. Now, we are reporting on this new study that shows how hearing aids can mitigate cognitive decline and memory loss. For this study, Asri Maharani, Ph.D., from the University of Manchester in the United Kingdom, along with his colleagues analyzed data from the Health and Retirement Study to see if hearing aid use altered cognitive trajectories in older adults.

The study included 2,040 adults aged 50 or older who participated in a minimum of 3 waves of study. During the study, researchers discovered that hearing aid use was positively associated with episodic memory scores. Declines in episodic scores slowed after hearing aid use began. The authors of the study concluded that hearing aids may have a mitigating effect on trajectories of cognitive decline in later life. Furthermore, providing hearing aids or other rehabilitative services for hearing impairment much earlier in the course of hearing impairment can reduce the rise of dementia around the world.
