Diabetes and hearing loss are two of America’s most widespread health concerns. Nearly 30 million people have diabetes and an estimated 34 million have some type of hearing loss. A recent study found that hearing loss is twice as common in people with diabetes as it is in those who don’t have the disease.

Hearing Loss and Memory Function
Seniors with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time than those who retain their hearing. Research showed the more hearing loss, the higher their likelihood of developing the memory robbing disease. Researchers speculate that hearing loss may lead to dementia by making individuals more socially isolated, a known risk factor for dementia.

Hearing Loss Linked to Depression
Hearing loss is linked with depression among American adults, especially women and those younger than age 70, according to new research. In the new study, as hearing declined, the percentage of depressed adults increased — from about 5 percent in those who had no hearing problems to more than 11 percent in those who did.

An extensive study established a relationship between sudden nerve hearing loss and stroke. This important study suggests that sudden loss of hearing might be an early sign of vulnerability to stroke, foreshadowing an actual event as much as two years.
